The 2011 4th gathering of the International Summer School on Roman Pottery in the Mediterranean: production, typology and distribution, following those of Lecce (2005), Catania (2007) and Tarragona  (2009), will be held at Aix-en-Provence, Maison Méditerranéenne des Sciences de l’Homme (MMSH), on 24th - 28th October 2011. This Summer School is organised by the Céramopôle, a transversal programme of the MMSH, with the collaboration of the Istituto per i Beni Archeologici e Monumentali of the Italian CNR (founder of the Roman Pottery Summer School in 2005), the Centre Camille Jullian (Research Unit of the University of Provence, the CNRS and the Culture Ministry), the University of Provence and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. The Service municipal d’Archéologie de la Ville de Marseille (Atelier du Patrimoine) and the Musée Départemental Arles Antique will also contribute to this Summer School.

The International Summer School on Roman Pottery in the Mediterranean is a high-level scientific course that aims to provide every Master’s or PhD students, of any age or geographical origin, with a theoretical framework and practical training on the most advanced methodologies of Roman pottery studies, 1st century BC-7th century AD. The teaching sessions and the numerous practical workshops held at Aix-en-Provence, Marseille and Arles, will be undertaken by several leading European experts coming from France, Great Britain, Italy and Spain. The International Summer School on Roman Pottery in the Mediterranean represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a solid knowledge of Roman pottery, but also to share field experiences and to join the nternational research network on craft production and the economy of the Roman world.

Admission & Application

APPLICATION CLOSED SINCE THE 15TH SEPTEMBER 2011.

The International Summer School on Roman Pottery in the Mediterranean gives priority to Master’s and PhD students; undergraduate students will be admitted only if places are available. A total of 40 students will be admitted to the Summer School, including 10 students of the University of Provence. The selection will be made on the basis of the academic degrees and curriculum studiorum of the students.

Application fee (150 €) The application fee give free access to the teaching sessions and practical workshops held at the MMSH of Aix-en-Provence, to the coffee breaks, the lunches at the MMSH cafeteria, to both the excursions by bus to Marseille and Arles, and to the lunches at those excursions. Each participant will receive a course pack including illustrated plates and bibliography about the sessions and practical workshops of the Summer School. Students of the University of Provence are exempt from the application fee.

Transport / AccommodationTransport to Aix-en-Provence and accommodation are not covered by the application fee. An
access map to the MMSH and a list of cheap hotels is available on the downloaded documents. See also the  Tourism Office of Aix.
